Janice Bell was another member of the illustrious class of 1958. Born in Vancouver, she always knew she would follow in the footsteps of her mother Elspeth (Kilpatrick) Bell (BASc(N) 1930) and aunt Heather Kilpatrick (BASc(N) 1931). After graduation, she married Stu Scott, who would be her husband of 49 years, and they raised a family of two sons and ultimately six grandchildren. Through a long career in nursing, Jan worked as a community health nurse in Vancouver and in outpatient areas at the Vancouver General Hospital. Interspersed between various roles, she also served many times as a sessional or part-time clinical instructor at UBC.
After retirement from VGH, Jan had a close relationship with the UBC School of Nursing, working as research assistant to several faculty members on projects requiring interviews by a graduate nurse and, undaunted by mandatory retirement rules at the time, Jan continued to do occasional clinical instruction into her 70s. Throughout her life, Jan remained in close contact as a “Friend of the School.” She had a passion for helping others and was known for her friendliness and enthusiasm.
Jan died June 27, 2016, after a lengthy and determined effort to recover from a serious spinal injury.
