After obtaining her BSN at the University of Alberta, Barbara Boyle graduated from UBC with her MSN in 1976. After a full career, she “retired” in 2001, but became a Clinical Systems Coordinator at the School of Nursing in 2002 and then worked with us again from June 2005 until she retired for good in 2010. Throughout her career she was involved in nursing education, practice (both acute care and community) and administration. In addition, she participated in a variety of professional activities related to practice standards and quality assurance. A member of the Xi Eta chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, she served on the Board of Directors and was actively involved in the “Ethel Johns Research Forum,” an annual event sponsored by the chapter early in the year as part of its mission to promote nursing knowledge. In her unique role at UBC she, with the Nurse Practitioner and IT team, designed and implemented structures and processes that support the faculty and students of the program. A major part of that role was the development and implementation of a competency-based e-portfolio.
In 2007/2008 she was the recipient of the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund to the tune of $35,000.00 for An Interactive Web based Matrix to Support the Knowledge Translation of Professional Standards, Scope of Practice Guidelines and Clinical Competencies for Nursing. As a co-Investigator with Cathryn Jackson and Principal, Bernie Garrett, Barbara worked on the Mobile Clinical Portfolios for Professional Health Care Students project.
Barbara died peacefully at home with her family on July 17, 2017.
